The strip beside a pool is the hardest grass in the yard
It gets splashed daily, walked on wet, shaded by the house for part of the day and scorched for the rest, and mowed awkwardly against coping and stone. In North Texas it also sits on clay that will not take the water it is being given. That is why the two-foot border around most DFW pools is either bare dirt, permanent mud, or a strip of Bermuda that has been reseeded three times. Built for splash-out, not just rain
A pool surround has to shed far more water than a normal lawn, in concentrated bursts, in the same spots every day. We build the base and the fall around that reality, use fully permeable backing, and detail the edge against coping and stone so it does not lift when it is constantly wet. The result is a border you can walk on barefoot and wet without carrying half of it back into the house.
What a pool deck install involves
- Drainage sized for daily splash-out: not just rainfall. Concentrated, repeated wetting in the same places is a different design problem, and over Houston Black clay at 0.03 inches an hour infiltration it has to be solved in the base.
- Clean edge detail against coping and stone: the join between turf and hardscape is where a pool install is judged, and where a bad one lifts first.
- Chlorine and salt tolerance: we spec turf and infill rated for repeated chlorinated and saline splash rather than assuming lawn product will cope.
- Honest heat planning: turf runs hotter than grass, and beside a pool that matters because people are barefoot. We plan lighter-color product, cooling infill and the shade you already have, and we tell you which areas bake in the afternoon.
- Nothing tracked into the water: no soil, no clippings, no mud on wet feet. This is the single most common reason DFW pool owners call us.

Does chlorine damage artificial turf?
Normal pool splash-out does not damage properly specified turf. The fibers are UV and chemical stable, and the infill we use around pools is chosen for repeated chlorinated and saline exposure. What does cause problems is a base that holds water rather than draining it, because that is where growth and odor start.
Will it be too hot to walk on barefoot?
It runs hotter than grass — that is honest. Synthetic surfaces have been measured around 200°F on a 98°F day in university testing, against natural grass rarely above 100°F. Beside a pool this matters because people are barefoot and wet, and wet feet on hot turf is genuinely uncomfortable. We plan for it with lighter-color product, cooling infill and by working with the shade your yard already has. Most pool owners find the wet traffic keeps the surrounds cooler than an open lawn in practice.
Can you turf right up to the coping?
Yes, and the edge detail is the part that matters. We anchor and finish the join against coping or stone so it stays flat under constant wetting. A poorly detailed edge beside a pool lifts faster than anywhere else in the yard.
What about the area between the pool and the fence?
That narrow strip is usually the worst grass on the property and the easiest win. It is also where dogs run, if you have them — see pet turf for the drainage and infill spec that combination needs.
Does it work over our clay?
