Backyard Putting Greens vs Regular Turf in North Texas

Homeowners ask for a green and get quoted like a lawn. That is how you end up with a surface that looks green in photos and lies to you on every 12 footer.

Elite Texas Turf installs both. The product, the base, and the price are different on purpose.

A practice green has one job: the ball has to roll true. That means:

• Short, dense putting turf, not 1.5 to 2 inch lawn blades
• A thicker compacted base, about eight inches instead of four
• Contours shaped in the base, not hoped for after the turf is down
• Regulation cups
• A fringe collar so chips and bump and runs behave like a course

Most of our North Texas backyard putting greens run $20 to $30 per installed square foot. Size, cups, and shaping set the number. Compact one hole greens cost more per foot. Greens around 400 square feet and up spread the fixed work. Typical projects land between $5,000 and $20,000.

Lawn turf is a different product. Residential installs in Dallas Fort Worth usually run $8 to $12 per installed square foot, with base, drainage, turf, and labor included.

Landscape turf is built to look like a yard and feel good underfoot. Putting turf is built so a golf ball stays on line. Here is how the two compare:

• Job: lawn turf is for looking green, walking, pets, and play. Putting turf is for predictable roll and speed.
• Pile: lawn turf runs about 1.5 to 2 inches. Putting turf runs about 3/8 to 5/8 inch, and dense.
• Base: lawn turf sits on about 4 inches of compacted base. A putting green gets about 8 inches, laser graded and shaped.
• Infill: lawn turf uses cooling or pet infill. Putting turf uses measured silica to set stimp speed.
• Edges: lawn turf meets lawn or hardscape. A putting green gets a fringe collar and cups.
• Installed range (ETT): lawn turf is $8 to $12 per sq ft. A putting green is $20 to $30 per sq ft.

Tall blades grab the ball. Soft lawn backing lets it hop and die. A four inch lawn base over DFW clay will move. After the first summer storm and a winter of shrink and swell, the “green” develops waves you can feel with a putter, even if you cannot see them from the patio.

If you want a lawn, install lawn turf. If you want to practice, install a green.

Bentgrass greens do not belong in a Dallas backyard. Heat, water restrictions, and clay soil make a real grass green a part time job.

Synthetic greens stay the same speed in July as they do in January. No mowing. No watering. No topdressing. Brush it, blow it off, and rinse it when it needs it.

The hard part here is under the turf. North Texas clay can swell more than 30% when wet and shrink when it dries. Cheap quotes cut the base. We don’t. The roll lives in the compacted foundation. That is most of the cost, and it is why the surface holds up in the heat.

1. Design. Size, cups, breaks, fringe, and how you actually practice, whether that is one hole or a short game pad.
2. Excavate and grade. Get off the clay and set drainage.
3. Base. Thicker compacted rock than a lawn, shaped for the breaks you approved.
4. Cups and fringe. Real holes, with slightly taller turf at the collar.
5. Putting surface. Short, dense turf, seamed clean, and infilled for speed.
6. Broom and check. The owner is on site through the last pass.

A “green” built with lawn turf looks finished on day one. Then the ball hops. Speed changes after rain. Seams show. You practiced the wrong roll for six months.

The fix is usually a tear out and a proper base. It is cheaper to build it right once.
